About The Workshop

The traditionally crafted braided rug has its origins in colonial America. During a time of frugality, these rugs were made from repurposed wool remnants, resulting in thick, durable floor coverings. Before the invention of modern vacuum cleaners, home rug braiders learned to work wool into tight, smooth braids, minimizing crevices that could collect dirt and dust. The braids were skillfully laced to ensure the rug always lay flat. These rugs can last a lifetime, or even longer.

In this two-day workshop, you will learn the art of rug braiding.

If you have a portable sewing machine, please bring it along, as it is essential for adding new strips. Don’t worry if you don’t own one—just let us know in advance, and we will have one ready for you.

We will provide the wool fabric needed to create a small rug. You are encouraged to scout your local thrift stores to…
